How consistent are you in your internet marketing?

Being consistent in your internet marketing (and elsewhere in your life) is something that’s well worth aiming for.

There are degrees of consistency – it doesn’t mean going into robot mode and sending out an email of precisely the same length at precisely the same time every day.

If your pattern of emails is mostly every few days and flurries of daily emails (Paul Myers does that) that works.

But if your pattern is daily emails for a couple of weeks followed by two or three weeks of silence (or even longer) then it’s probably time to rethink.

We’re creatures of habit and one of those habits are the messages we receive.

Leave sending messages to your list for too long and they’ll forget you exist or even mark the message as spam which won’t help the deliverability of the rest of the messages you send.

Likewise, if you’re posting regularly on your website then the search engine crawlers will work out your routine.

They’re good at that because it’s the best way to use the resources it takes to run a search engine – it’s pointless coming back to your site daily if you only update it monthly or even less often.

You might think that it doesn’t take much in the way of resources to send a computer in to check whether you’ve added anything new and on an individual website basis you’d be right. But multiply that by millions and millions of websites and it adds up to a unimaginably large amount.

Which means that if you’re not consistent in adding new content to your website then the search engines will crawl it less often.

Add in what seems to be a liking for new content (except, weirdly, if you’re searching for a current event when the results often return long-past events instead) then it’s a double whammy.

The actual routine doesn’t much matter.

Personally, I like to send an email near enough every day, post one or two new pages to my main website most weeks (I’m trying to get back in the routine of new content daily) and add a few new videos to my YouTube channel each week plus upload the slides to SlideShare.

Your routine will likely be different.

And mine is by no means robotic but it’s reasonably consistent which is much better than a haphazard “when I get round to it” approach which seems to be used by so many internet marketers.

Take a step backwards and work out how consistent – or inconsistent – your routine is and adjust accordingly.
