Email Campaigns: Should You Write Your Own or Not?

It’s tempting to use pre-written email campaigns and send them to your list.

That’s why so many products and product launches come with email swipe files that you can use out of the box.

But is that the best way?

Or are you selling yourself – and your sales – short?

It seems all of us are always looking for short-cuts.

Fast food is the most obvious example: instead of taking the time to cook a burger yourself and prepare the salad and fries, you buy one ready cooked.

Sure, it doesn’t taste the same as home-made. Depending on how good you are at cooking, it’s either a bit better or a bit worse. But it’s quick and convenient.

The same goes for ready-made email campaigns.

In the internet marketing world, I recently sent my list to this offer if they wanted some pre-written emails.

They were written by a respected marketer and I knew they’d be good quality.

But – and it’s a big but – there would be a disconnect between those emails and the personality of the person sending them.

Except in science fiction. we can’t jump into someone else’s skin and instantly take on their personality traits.

We’re all unique.

We all have our own way of saying things, thinking about things.

Which is what makes us unique as human beings.

But it’s also what makes using pre-written email campaigns dangerous.

Actors get paid lots of money to pretend to be someone else.

And they take a lot of time to get to the stage where they can (maybe) convince us that’s the case.

They also get the chance to do re-takes when they don’t get things perfect the first time.

Lots and lots of rehearsal and retakes.

It takes about 9 months to produce a new series of 24 or similar TV blockbusters. That’s over a week and a half to create roughly 40 minutes of television.

You haven’t got that luxury in real life.

If you took 9 months to create 24 emails, you’d have no-one reading your list by the time you’d written the last one. They’d have forgotten who you were.

Which is why the idea of pre-written campaigns is so attractive.

All you have to do is copy them into your autoresponder series and them sign off with your own name.

But – of course – your list will see straight through that.

There’ll be a disconnect.

Because your site or blog will be written in a different voice. Maybe your voice, maybe the voice of the outsourcer you paid to write the content, maybe the voice(s) of the people who wrote or compiled the PLR content that you thought was good enough to attract visitors.

Then there’s the giveaway product you’re using to entice people onto your list.

Maybe you created it yourself, maybe it was created for you, maybe it’s PLR from a different source again.

The list goes on.

It’s awkward.

There are only so many hours in a day and you can’t do everything.

But the less time you spend on the messages you send to your list, the less they will react to those messages.

It really is that simple – even if that’s not what you wanted me to tell you.

Sure, I could have sugar coated things and told you that it’s all right to send an email to your list that someone else wrote.

But I wouldn’t be telling you the truth.

In fact, I’d be doing you a complete dis-service.

You’ll be better off sending an email to your list every few days if you’ve written it yourself than if you send any old stuff to your list more often that doesn’t match up with itself or the other messages you’ve sent.
