My personal favourite Web 2.0 site used to be Squidoo until Seth Godin got fed up with it and sole out to HubPages.
Another site that crops up on a regular basis in the search results is HubPages.
This is a lot twitchier about self-promotion than Squidoo used to be, which is why I don’t use it. But if you can work round their computer-based editorial control, it can work quite well.
HubPages has a much lower limit on outbound links than other sites – you’ll only get away with one or two to your site normally – and it does prefer that you take a fairly active part in its community although you can get away with skipping that part.
It’s closer to being an article site with photographs, so it’s easier to create a “hub” (web page) and you essentially only need a long-ish article of 600 words or so, which I tend to split into two parts and use a module for each. Most articles can be split in two like that – just look for a logical place to split them.
Then pretty up the page by finding some photos you have permission to use. As normal, make sure that the image names include your keywords and that you set the “Alt” text in the appropriate box.
If I do create a hub, I’ll typically point one of the links to my own site and the other to a different site such as a Blogger or WordPress page. Then I’ll send a few article links over the following few weeks.
So long as you’ve chosen a reasonably long tail keyword you’ll find that is probably enough to get your hub near the top of Google over the coming weeks or months. If not, send a few more article links and maybe some video links to it as well – gently does it with HubPages.
